ACTIVITIES
|
The Old English Sheepdog Club of
Greater Seattle hosts many events for members and friends. Each month, the Board
of Directors meets (usually on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 7:00
p.m.) to go over club business. All club members are invited to attend these
board meetings. Our General Meeting is held in May and our Annual Meeting is
held in July.
Other get-togethers: From
time to time, the board or individual club members may plan events for members
and interested people.

GROUP WALKS
Do you have a favorite walk that you and your OES enjoy? Maybe it's a woodland scene - or the streets of a small town. If you would like to share your walk with other club members, please give Gary Faull, our "Walkies" chair, a call. He will help you organize and advertise your "official" walk. We've had groups from five to twenty people (and dogs). Past walks include Alki beach and Gas Works Park. We get lots of stares, and it's good advertising for our Rescue services. There is usually a coffee shop or latte stand on the course, but we can also just stop for a rest. For more information, please call Gary Faull at 509.656.3127 or 206.915.7902 (c). It's a great way to exercise your sheepie - and you!

OESCGS SPECIALTY
Potluck, and Raffle, Enumclaw, Washington. We normally have a summer
specialty show entry of about 45 dogs. This show is held in mid-August,
on the Friday prior to two large all-breed weekend shows. Other events
at the Summer Specialty include a Potluck Dinner and the Piccadilly
Raffle/Auction (where club members donate items to be auctioned off for
the benefit of the club treasury). It's a great opportunity to spend
three days chatting with friends and spending time with the show dogs.
This is an event where your dog cannot attend unless it is entered in
the shows (AKC rules.) The judge for this event is usually a breeder
judge.

SuperDogs!
Every Fall in the month of September, one of our stalwart members
volunteers their home and acreage for the annual SuperDogs! Event. There
are contests that measure the intelligence of our dogs -- and of their
owners. Every dog, whether show dog, companion dog, or rescue dog, has a
chance of being SuperDog! for the Day! Our 2004 winner had been rescued
by his owners. Our 2005 dog was a friendly little female companion,
owned by the daughter of one of our board members. The contests include:
The Fastest Dog to the Car Keys, T-Shirt Swap (t-shirts on sheepdogs
and people) in a relay race, Find the Bait (sausage under paper plates
with different scores written on top), Sloppiest Kisser, Cup Runneth
Over (racing a with a cup of water in the hand with a leash attached to
a sheepdog), and the Wiggliest Bum. Each contest event winner receives a
prize -- and the OES with the highest score becomes the SuperDog! It's a
great day of fun for the dogs running around, the folks visiting, and
the good food from the potluck entries. Thanks to Jan and Terry Van Fredenberg for hosting!

MACY*S PARADE
This parade is in downtown Seattle, Washington. The Old English Sheepdog
Club of Greater Seattle participates in the Macy*s Thanksgiving Parade
every year. It is held in the morning on the day after Thanksgiving. We
meet in the morning to don our holiday soldier costumes (black pants,
red sweatshirts, white turtle-necks, white gloves, tall furry hats, and
sheepdog bows). Our marching patterns remain the same each year and we
are always a crowd favorite. We normally have about 30 soldiers and
marching OES participate! We usually make an appearance on local
television.

HOLIDAY PARTY
This party is held at a member's
home. During the year, members are asked to attend one or two events
where their OES have to stay home. One of these is the Annual Holiday
Party - always a success. Our hosts prepare the delicious prime rib main
entree and open their home to us. Club members bring potluck dishes and
a funny/fancy exchange gift. We always have lots of good food and a fabulous time!

SEMINARS
Many of the club members have information on history, health, grooming, and
behavior of Old English Sheepdogs. Both formal presentations and informal
discussions abound when members compare methods on everything from nail clipping
to showdog grooming. Has your puppy been chewing glasses, TV remotes, and other
valuable objects? Do you need to find out how to teach a puppy or adult dog good
manners? Do you need information about local obedience classes? Do you need to
know how to build a grooming table? You will find many members willing to help
you with almost any problem you have or direct you to a local class. Ask a board
member when you think it would be nice to have a get-together on a subject on
which you would like more information. Oftentimes, that starts the ball rolling
and the board will set up a seminar to cover areas of interest.
